Metastatic Breast Cancer - Iron Megan's Mandalorians

MBC Iron Megan's Mandalorians

2022 is year 3 for this team, we will be running and walking to raise money for Metastasic Breast Cancer.

I chose this name because the Mandalorians are a race of people in the Star Wars Universe that were  a clan-based cultural group that was composed of members from multiple species all bound by a common culture, creed, and code. They were some of the most feared warriors in the galaxy. Mandalorians shared a strong code of honour.

Some facts about MBC:

Metastatic Breast Cancer is breast cancer that has spread outside the breast. The most common metastases occur in the liver, lung, bones or brain. Breast cancer only kills once it has left the breast.

Most people with metastatic breast cancer were first treated with early stage disease (Stage 0-3). Metastatic recurrences can occur 1, 5, 10 years after diagnosis and treatment. About 20-30% of people originally diagnosed with early stage disease will develop MBC.*

About 5% (1300-1500/year in Canada) of people diagnosed with breast cancer are Stage IV (de novo). This means that breast cancer has metastasized outside the breast at initial diagnosis.  THIS IS ME!

Researchers still do not understand why metastasis occurs. It is complicated. Mostly it is bad luck.

An estimated 15,000 Canadians are living with MBC.*

Treatment for MBC is lifelong and focuses on control of the disease and quality of life. But eventually the tumours become resistant to treatment.

Metastatic breast cancer accounts for about 5,000 deaths annually in Canada. The median life span after diagnosis is about 3 years.

*Statistics Canada and the provincial cancer registries do not track metastatic recurrences, thus only estimates are available.

Please join us to raise awareness of MBC and to raise important funds for MBC research.

Did you know that just $100 could fund two hours of life-saving research in a world class laboratory? Your contribution could lead to the next breakthrough!

Together, we can change the future of breast cancer.

Thanks in advance for your support!
