About the event

What is Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer?
The Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is a non-competitive, pledge-based fundraising event organized by the Canadian Cancer Society that is being held in a number of communities across Ontario.

How will the funds raised be used?
Funds raised at each Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event will support breast cancer-related research.

Is there a required minimum fundraising amount?
While there is no registration fee, there is a minimum fundraising amount of $30 to participate in your local Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event. There is no minimum for children under 14 or breast cancer survivors. Fundraising pledges are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. The average participant raises over $100 in pledges, why not try to beat the average?

Are there incentive prizes for fundraising at a Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event?
When you raise over $100 in pledges you will receive your commemorative Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer t-shirt.  Children under the age of 14 need to raise over $30 in order to be eligible for their t-shirt.

How long is the walk?
The distance varies at each location. Walks are between 5-10 km.

Are in-line skates and bicycles permitted?
Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is a walk. The routes are not set up for biking or in-line skating. For safety reasons, we ask you not to bring your in-line skates or bicycles.

Is running permitted?
Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is a walk. This non-competitive event encourages people of all ages, as well as families, to participate. In order to promote this non-competitive atmosphere we do not allow running.

What if it rains/snows/hails during the event?
The Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer takes place rain or shine - please check your local weather station the day of your event and bring the appropriate protective clothing.

Can I bring my pet?
No. Pets are not allowed at Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer events.

Why is there no smoking at the Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer events?
Smoking is strictly prohibited at all Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer events. There is a correlation between the use of tobacco and cancer. Tobacco use causes about 45,000 deaths in Canada each year. The Canadian Cancer Society wants to set a positive example in the area of tobacco control by prohibiting the use of tobacco at events. Smokers are welcome to participate, but they are asked to respect the smoke-free environment. More information about tobacco and cancer.

Why is alcohol not allowed at the Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer?
Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is not an event that is conducive to the serving of alcohol. We do not have alcohol permits at any of our Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer events.

Survivor registration

How may I be recognized at the walk as a breast cancer survivor or as someone who has breast cancer?
When you register online, by mail or by fax, simply check the box beside the statement "I have breast cancer or have survived breast cancer and would like to be recognized at the walk" If you register by phone, please let your local Canadian Cancer Society office know that you are a breast cancer survivor. The day of the walk you will be given a pink survivor bib to commemorate your survivorship.

Participant registration 

Do I have to be registered to participate?
No. You do not have to register in advance to participate in a Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event. We do however, encourage you to register in advance so you can take advantage of e-mail invitations and raise more pledges online. 

How do I register for the Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer?
You can register online, by phone or by fax (look for the "Get involved" section). Once you've selected an event location, you have the opportunity to register online. Alternatively, you can contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office that is managing that event location and ask for a Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer brochure with a registration form in it.

How can I get others involved with me?
If you are registered online, you can use our handy e-mail invitations to send personalized e-mails to your family, friends and co-workers to ask them to join you by participating or to pledge you for the event. (You need to be logged in to your personal account to do this). Your recipients will get an e-mail with a personal message from you containing a quick link. This link gives people an easy way to join you or support you in your participation by pledging you.

Can I fax in my registration?
Yes.  If you have a Taking Steps brochure, you can fax the registration form in it to the Canadian Cancer Society office that is managing that event location.

Can I phone in my registration?
Yes. Once you've selected an event location, choose the option to register "by phone". You'll get the telephone contact information for the Canadian Cancer Society office that is managing that event location.

Can I register on the day of the event?
Yes. You can register in person at any Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer location up to the start of the event. We do, however, encourage you to register in advance so you can take advantage of e-mail invitations and raise more pledges online.

Volunteering

How do I volunteer?
If you want to volunteer for a Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event, you can register online by mail or fax, or by phone. Once you've selected an event location, you have the option of registering as a volunteer online. You can also get the telephone contact information and street address for that office so you can register by phone or in person.

What do volunteers do at the Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer?
Help make Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer happen in your community by volunteering on the day of the event or becoming involved beforehand as a committee member. There is a wide range of volunteer opportunities for each Taking Steps location, from participating in organizing committees, to setting up the site location and serving food at the event. For specific opportunities, please contact your local Canadian Cancer Society Unit office.

Pledges and tax receipts

How many sponsors do I need?
As many as you want.

Do I have to collect the donations from the people who have agreed to pledge me?
Yes. You should ask your pledgers to give you their generous donation at the same time they pledge you, except for online pledges which are paid by credit card immediately during the online pledging process.

When will the Canadian Cancer Society send out tax receipts for Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer pledges and donations?
Donors who've pledged online should receive immediate confirmation of their donation by e-mail. An official electronic tax receipt will be sent attached to a separate e-mail to the same address 6-8 weeks later. If you do not receive your receipt or if you would like to have a receipt mailed to you instead, please contact us by e-mail at takingstepssupport@ontario.cancer.ca.

How do I make a make a donation even though I'm not participating in the Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer?
You can pledge a participant or team, or make a general donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

What do I do with the money I have collected?
You can submit your pledges at the event or drop them off at the Canadian Cancer Society office managing your event.

Can I pledge without using the Internet?
Yes. You can pledge directly to any participant or you can contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office for donation information.

Why wasn't my credit card accepted?
There are several reasons a credit card might not be accepted. You might want to check that you have typed the number in correctly, that the expiry date is correct and that the name you've typed in appears exactly as it does on the card.

I lost my tax receipt, how can I get another copy?
If you have lost your tax receipt, contact us by e-mail at takingstepssupport@ontario.cancer.ca

Can I get my tax receipt sent to me online?
Yes. Donors who've pledged online should receive immediate confirmation of their donation by e-mail. An official electronic tax receipt will be sent attached to a separate e-mail to the same address 6-8 weeks later.

Can I make a general donation to the Canadian Cancer Society?
Yes. Go to cancer.ca and select "Donate online" from any page on the site.

Security and privacy

Can people other than my team see the results of my fundraising?
No. Access to this information is by username and password only.

I forgot my password. How can I get a new one?
You can use the "Forgot my password" link on the log in screen. You will be asked for your e-mail address (which is also your username). We will send your password to your e-mail address.

I forgot my username. Who can help me?
Your username is your e-mail address. If you cannot remember which e-mail address you used or you have recently changed your e-mail address, please contact the Canadian Cancer Society office managing your event location.

Technical questions

What are your minimum browser requirements for online registration?
The minimum browser requirements for Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer online registration are Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape 6.0. If you are having trouble with the online registration process, please contact our webmaster.

General questions

How do I notify you of a change of address?
If you registered online, you can log in to your personal account and change your contact information anytime by selecting "Change contact info". You can also contact the Canadian Cancer Society office managing your Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer location. If you did not register online, you need to contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office.
