Funds raised through Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer fund groundbreaking breast cancer research. To date, the Canadian Cancer Society has contributed close to $90 million to leading-edge breast cancer research in Canada, helping us to better understand the disease and make discoveries. This has led to important advances in screening and treatments, meaning the death rate for breast cancer has declined by 30 per cent over the past two decades, which means more women are surviving.

Key facts about breast cancer in Canada

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian women, and the second most common cause of cancer death among women. But it is not just a woman’s disease; like all cancers, it touches spouses, partners, children, parents, siblings, friends and co-workers.

This year, an estimated 22,700 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 5,400 will die from it, In fact, one in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
