Lesbian, bisexual and queer women, if you’re over 50 years old then you need to think about the health of your colon! We are often told to get mammograms and Pap tests, but we cannot forget that we need to get screened for colon cancer as well. Sometimes talking about your colon can be uncomfortable or embarrassing, but it’s incredibly important that we take care of ourselves and get screened—make your bottom your top priority!
Colon cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers for women in Canada and lesbian, bisexual and queer women are not immune. While we don’t have firm statistics on the rates of colon cancer screening among lesbian, bisexual and queer women, we do know that our communities are less likely to get screened and less likely to go to the doctor.
Talking about cancer doesn’t have to be scary. When caught early, colon cancer is 90% curable!
