Persevering through a cancer diagnosis with optimism and the love of her family

Kim Kirshenbaum

In 2019, many of the goals that Kim Kirshenbaum wanted to achieve by the time she was 50 were coming true. Her entertainment company, Cherry Tree productions, was entering its’ 30th year and she had just been promoted to Assistant Vice President, Product and Financial Planning at IG Wealth Management. She was also about to celebrate 17 years of marriage with the love of her life, Barry. Along with their daughter Eryn, they were planning another summer at Winnipeg Beach, Kim’s happy place, where they liked to go boating, walk along the sand and entertain family and friends. If asked to describe Kim, people would say she’s selfless, compassionate, thoughtful and loving.

But the same year, Kim received news that no one was prepared for. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Triple Negative Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This form of breast cancer is found in less than 1% of people who are diagnosed with cancer. With no known cure, frightening statistics and limited treatment options, Kim began an aggressive treatment plan. For 8 months, she was given chemotherapy and immune therapy drugs. However, this did little to stop the progression of the disease. The cancer eventually spread to her abdomen, pelvis, lungs and spine after 4 additional months of oral chemotherapy. Kim is still not cancer-free and will likely never be. Cancer may have changed her life, but because of her tenacious and passionate spirit, it has not taken her smile, positive attitude and willingness to live life to the fullest!
