Healthcare providers

Privacy and confidentiality

LGBTQ clients may be more comfortable and likely to disclose information important to their sexual health if they know that information will be protected. Healthcare providers can develop and distribute a written confidentiality statement that explains:

  • what personal information — including information about gender identity, sexual orientation, medications, surgical procedures and results of medical tests — is covered
  • who has access to medical records, including insurance companies
  • measures in place to ensure confidentiality
  • under what circumstances confidentiality may not be maintained

Display the confidentiality statement prominently in your waiting area, and provide it in writing to and discuss it with each client. Consider having all staff agree to the statement in writing.

Always give clients the option of refusing to answer questions.
